Forbes Coaches Council

There’s a lot to be said for having a consistent daily routine. Many leaders try to create good habits like exercising and writing out their to-do lists for the day to help them stay productive and on task. But sometimes, the most beneficial daily practices are ones you might not instinctively think to do.

We asked a panel of Forbes Coaches Council members to share the surprising daily habits that have helped their clients thrive as leaders. Whether you’re looking to shake up your existing routine or create a new one, it’s worth experimenting with some of these habits to find the right fit for you.

14 Smart Daily Habits That Will Make You A Better Leader

12. Change Up Your Commute Every Day

Take a different way to and from the office each day. You have to move from habit and comfort zone if you are taking new ways to get to places you normally go. An added bonus is you might just find something new and exciting on your adventure. – Sharon SaylerCompetitive Edge Communications

No one wants to work in a job with a toxic culture. You want to improve your skills and build your resume, not develop ulcers. And while not all job sites have this many alarm bells ringing at the same time, you can still avoid signing on with a troubled organization. Here is what members of Forbes Coaches Council suggest you watch for:

 9. Watch For Passive-Aggressive Behavior

“Look for signs of passive-aggressive behaviors among team members. Passive aggressiveness is a form of covert power where someone gives the appearance of compliance, or “falling into line,” however uses tactics such as smart-aleck responses, gossip, delays, misdirection or withholding information. It is a sign of not feeling safe in your environment and expressing anger without looking angry.” – Sharon SaylerCompetitive Edge Communications

1. Tell The Truth

It’s simple, but too few do it these days. Tell the truth — no spin, no alternative facts. The brands I’m passionate about are the ones that are worthy of the trust I’ve put into them, be it trust that my children will be safe with their product, my life will be enhanced by their product, the world will be a better place, etc. Once that trust is broken, my relationship with that brand is over. – Sharon SaylerCompetitive Edge Communications

Sandberg Falls Flat, Not Leans In

Time Magazine recently featured Sheryl Sandberg, author of “Lean In,” with the headline, “Don’t Hate Her Because She’s Successful.”

“I am disappointed that she posed in a “Geez, I hope you like me” posture. The crossed ankles while standing says, ‘little girl’ and the fig-leaf pose of the hands screams, ‘I’m just like you’ or, ‘I’m harmless.’ The fig-leaf and crossed ankle position makes you look physically smaller. In body language for success, size matters,” said Sharon Sayler, author of “What Your Body Says (and how to master the message): Inspire, Influence, Build Trust, and Create Lasting Business Relationships.”

PORTLAND, OREGON, January 21 2013 —  Maybe you saw the video… First Lady Michelle Obama was caught on video yesterday during the President’s 2013 inaugural luncheon appearing to roll her eyes in displeasure at the Speaker of the House.Dismissive body language works, if your intention is to show disapproval without saying a word, It happens most often as an unconscious response to our own hurt feelings, misunderstanding of what just happened or those righteous indignation moments where “I know I’m right and you’re wrong!” Be aware though, it is also a subtle saboteur.  Read more
